FIXIN

A PERSONAL REFLECTION
Terroir, ORIGIN,
and identity
The lieux-dits for our Village appellation wines in Fixin include “Aux Crais”, “Petits Crais” (as listed in the 1828 cadastre), and “En Crechelin”.
The toponym crai refers to stony terrain—gravelly subsoils formed by rounded stones atop a layer of clay, deposited by glacial alluvium that once filled the Saône Valley.
Vines thrive in this type of soil when the crai is covered by a sufficiently thick layer of topsoil.
