GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN
Village
Gevrey-Chambertin wines are deeply colored, with striking aromatic expression.
In their youth, they offer notes of blackcurrant and red or black berries layered with licorice. With time, additional aromas emerge: fur, musk, spiced vanilla, cedar, and aged tobacco.
These are powerful, structured wines—robust yet balanced. Their bouquet, finesse, and storied name have long earned renown. After all, wasn’t it Napoleon I’s favorite wine?

A PERSONAL REFLECTION
Terroir, ORIGIN,
and identity
“In Gevrey, the landscape grows more expansive, starker, and more austere,” wrote Camille Rodier.
Steady slopes unfold from wild, rocky hillsides. The nine Grand Crus lie along these sun-washed, stony slopes—where the first signs of marl and Jurassic stone begin to surface. Within the communal appellations, the alluvial fan of the Combe de Lavaut explains why the soil is composed of stony alluvium and promotes excellent drainage.
For our Village-level wines, the lieu-dit is Champs-Chenys, located near Charmes and Mazoyères. The name may refer to the light color of the soil (champs blancs), suggesting a high limestone content. Another theory holds that Champs-Chenys derives from champs chenus, meaning “old fields.”
